Citizens Committee
for the Search for the Victims

Citizens Committee for the Search for the Residents of Suwałki Region Who Went Missing in July 1945 (Obywatelski Komitet Poszukiwań Mieszkańców Suwalszczyzny Zaginionych w Lipcu 1945 roku)

Established in summer 1987 in Suwałki, the Citizens Committee for the Search for the Residents of Suwałki Region Who Went Missing in July 1945 aimed to remind the public about the crime and to gather any existing documentation about the victims. Although it was harassed by the Security Service (Służba Bezpieczeństwa, SB), the organisation made an invaluable contribution to the cause by collecting materials on the crime and raising awareness of the issue. Members of the committee visited well over a hundred villages, conducted thousands of interviews, drafted information sheets on several hundred victims and collected various materials, including official documents, certificates and photographs. The work of the committee was supported by such personalities as Jerzy Giedroyć, Ryszard Kaczorowski, the President of Poland in exile, or Zofia and Zbigniew Romaszewski.

Thanks to the work of the committee, by 1989 the Augustów Roundup had become a widely-known issue of public interest. As a result, new exhumations were carried out in the Wielki Bór forest area near Giby, where the remains of the victims were expected to be found. Materials collected by the committee were also used by the County Public Prosecution Office (Prokuratura Wojewódzka) in Suwałki, when it opened an investigation into the fate of the victims of the roundup operation in 1992.
